We feel bonds with distant friends, good neighbors, or complete strangers. Guided by Floris Rijssenbeek, writer Ece Temelkuran, artist Tina Farifteh, and philosopher Babah Tarawally set out to unravel the nature of a shared humanity and kinship. A nation of strangers, living in a mienskip (community), embracing the philosophy of ubuntu —these ideas about living together sound so promising. What are the limitations in how we think about forming communities? By deconstructing assumptions and myths, we may come even closer to the essence of humanity.
