about etgar keret

For the Israeli writer and filmmaker Etgar Keret, fiction is literally of vital importance. After the suicide of his best friend, he sought refuge in writing short, absurdist narratives, so as not to succumb to the same destructive temptation. These stories have made him world-famous.

Keret teaches creative writing in both Israel and the US. His short story collections have won numerous awards and are published in some forty countries, and his weekly column Alphabet Soup can be read on Substack.

He lives in Tel Aviv with his wife, actress and film director Shira Geffen, and their son. Keret and Geffen were known as outspoken critics of the Netanyahu government long before the war in Gaza.
