The working class has become alienated from the welfare state. Left-wing, social parties have lost their traditional support base. What went wrong? Writer and sociologist Didier Eribon moved back to the working-class neighbourhood he had once left behind in search of answers. Together with Eribon, we examine the deep divisions in contemporary democracies. How can we find political solidarity that bridges class divides and fosters a new sense of community?

Didier Eribon is a celebrated sociologist, philosopher, writer and chronicler of the French intellectual elite. His book Return to Reims (2009) has become a modern classic. Eribon is regarded as the philosophical mentor of French writer Édouard Louis. Like Louis, he gives voice to inequality and class differences in today’s France.
