Two big Festival Specials feature in the run-up to the festival, which takes place on Sunday, 30 October. On Saturday afternoon, 29 October, we will be looking into The Origins of Inequality with world-famous economist Oded Galor.

We all want to be the best version of ourselves. But how free are we really when it comes to choosing our own path through life? Does hard work bring economic success within reach? Or are your chances in this world determined by where you were born, where you grew up and your gender?

We take a deep dive into history with world-famous economist Oded Galor. We will pick apart the origins of inequality and how this still defines our lives today. Tim ’S Jongers (director of the Wiardi Beckman Stichting) and theatre-maker Ola Mafaalani will discuss with Oded Galor, and together with him consider whether it is possible to climb the socio-economic ladder. Presented by Maaike Schoon.

When: Saturday 29 October, doors 14h15, programme starts 15h00 (no admittance after the start owing to television recording).
Where: Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, Nes 45 in Amsterdam.
