all things are too small
26 october • 16:00 – 17:30 • skatecafé
At Skatecafé in Amsterdam-Noord, we will talk with American writer and columnist Becca Rothfeld about her essay collection All Things Are Too Small. In this book she challenges minimalism as an ideal for our lives.
Our culture’s embrace of minimalism has left our souls impoverished: decluttering has reduced our living spaces to empty non-places; the mindfulness trend has emptied our minds of the thoughts that make us who we are; the regularization of sex has drained it of unpredictability and therefore true eroticism; and our quest for balance has yielded fictions whose protagonists aspire to excise their appetites. With the help of Hadewijch of Brabant, John Rawls, Herman Melville, and many others, Becca Rothfeld challenges us to celebrate chaos and make more room for abundance in our lives. Under the guidance of Charlotte Remarque, we’ll discuss All Things Are Too Small with Becca Rothfeld.
